Palace of the Popes and Place du Palais
A residence of the popes in the 14th century, the Palace of the Popes raises its massive towers at the heart of the old city. Its Court of Honour becomes, every July, the largest stage of the Avignon Festival. All year round, the square is an open-air lounge: terraces, kiosks and street musicians. For a first date, it is hard to find a more solemn — or more lively — setting.
Rue des Teinturiers, the bohemian soul
A little off the main tourist hub, Rue des Teinturiers follows the Sorgue under plane trees, with waterwheels still turning. The street gathers independent cafés, bookshops and off-festival theatres. The place breathes freedom, especially during the Festival, when every square metre carries a poster, a monologue, an unexpected encounter.
Museums and contemporary scene
A step from the palace, the Petit Palais houses a remarkable collection of Italian primitives. A little further, the Lambert Collection, in two town houses, offers a sweeping view of contemporary art. The Grand Avignon Opera completes this cultural circuit. On Lyad, people from Avignon share their favourite outings; a chance to find someone to push the door of an off-festival venue with.
